St. Mina’s home; you have captured our heart Grateful, love, perspective, joy, hope, purpose, opportunity, euphoric, inspired, culture. These are just words that capture the surface of how we felt visiting St Mina’s Children’s home in April this year and if you ask us how we feel today, we will share with you the exact same feeling. In April 2015, through the blessings of God we were so humbly given the opportunity to visit the wonderful Nadi, Fiji and connect and bond with these amazing children and staff at St Mina children’s home. Leading up to our visit we weren’t sure what to expect or what opportunities we have to “make a change”. However we felt God directed and guided our thoughts and we resonated with the verse that says: “The son of man did not come to be served, but to serve” Mark 10:45. If the Son of Man Himself humbled Himself to serve all those He met, what a wonderful and heartfelt opportunity it would be to humbly walk in His footsteps and we definitely did receive. Service is generally about giving but we truly received, DAILY. We came to help them in any way possible but they in turn helped us. Helped us realise the urgent need to become more grateful, more simple, more loving, more smiley, more untied with politics and stresses of the world. These wonderful, smart, caring, loving kids come from all walks of life and together under the one roof with the love and dedication of the amazing carers and staffs call themselves brothers and sisters. On the surface these kids may appear less privileged and lacking the basic necessities of life; like parents, however deep down these kids are much more deeper and richer than so many of us living in the western world today. These kids have so much resilience, fear of God, love, innocence in their heart, it’s so inspiring. All you need to do is share a smile, a hug, an act of service and you have automatically won their hearts. They literally and practically demonstrated: “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matt 18:3) We integrated into their daily routine which involved a variety of activities that included feeding, school drop off and pick up, playing outside with a ball, on the swings, helping with homework, supporting and encouraging chapel time, listening to their beautiful prayers and simply just hanging out with them. The smiles of those 21 adorable children, each having their own personality, their own way of saying our names, their own outlook on life and an amazing and massive love for God is truly inspiring. The dedication of the church congregation to attend church even when there is no priest or liturgy. To stand and pray in the heat without fail. To not miss an opportunity in teaching God's word at Sunday school and singing praises. The dedication of the carers to prepare the children and bring them to church, even when their van is not working. The love for God that the children have despite their hurtful past, the love of learning about Him, His Son and His saints, the love of singing hymns, the love for each other is truly inspiring The beauty of the moulding of Fijian culture and the ideals of the church complement each other so well. The love of God is ever present and flourishing despite resource shortages and limited servants. We have been blessed with the opportunity to visit once and we pray that we can visit again and again. An opportunity to serve and receive the blessings of this amazing service is truly life changing. Rania Bishay, Mary Soliman & Sherie Sourial |
